Woman Sweeping A Road (Dec 06)

Can a simple picture of a woman sweeping a dusty road in her village make an arresting image? The answer is yes, if the picture conveys a mood and atmosphere that evoke the emotions of the viewers. This picture was taken near the Shwezigon Pagoda walkway. Rays of sunlight sifted through the trees in the early morning as the woman sweeped a dirt track in her village, kicking up a storm of dust which caught the golden threads of the sunlight, generating a mood of optimism and hope. From the picture, one gets the feeling that the simple life of the woman sweeping the road is serene and cheerful, free from the worries of the world, an emotional tone that is conveyed by the mood and atmosphere of the image.

You should have said, "aroused the emotions of the viewers," not "evoked".
Excellent picture!

Thanks, Jeremy, for this response. I am always delighted to learn that others are inspired to make expressive images by my own photographs -- in this case the image I've posted athttp://www.pbase.com/image/40171966 . I think it is important to note that your own photograph here is based on entirely different subject matter, yet still uses the principles of atmosphere and mood in the same way that my image does. Your caption is instructive as well, summing up the reasons your image works as expression very much in the same manner as the caption I wrote for my image. As you point out, both images are convey a mood of optimism and hope. They generate emotional response and convey meaning in much the same way. I am glad my image influenced your thinking here, Jeremy. I will make sure to add a link to your image in my caption so that others can learn from your thoughts as well as your actions. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Phil, for visiting my site and your comments which are especially significant for this picture. For it was your image 'Threesome, Phonsavan, Laos' that gave me the clue and inspiration to make this one of my own, and I based its caption on yours too, for good measure. We had come here to photography the covered passageways of Shwezigon Pagoda, and passed by this village which was located right next to one of the passageways. The time of day and atmospheric conditions were right, and this woman happened to be there sweeping the road, kicking up even more dust into the air which caught the golden light of the morning sun. So the picture was taken. Otherwise, one could have easily passed the place and scene without giving it a second look. Rgds.

The dust is wonderful. As you point out, you have made an ordinary subject into an extraordinary image by bulding it around atmosphere and emotional content (mood). You found her here and you made the most of it. It is more effective because she is not posed here as a prop.
