This beautiful plant seemed more like a house plant than something that might be found growing in the forest on the kona coast.

John, if you take a closer look at the leaves you will see s striking similarity to the medinilla. I think this is a member of the same family of plants.
Based on a number of local experts this is a classic example of houseplants asserting themselves in our native forest and underbrush. The plant and flowers are beautiful as you noted. Great shot.
