Koa Forest

Hawaii

Acacia koa

The forest in this area contained only one species of tree, Koa, which is native to the islands. Koa wood was used to make canoes by the native Hawaiian people. Today koa wood is used to make many things from small carvings to pieces of furniture. Koa forests are a valuable resource and habitat type for native wildlife of the islands.
