Pagliacci by Paul Wear

I know what you’re thinking, Paul you’ve processed one two many pixels. But this did start as a photograph as proof I’ve put the original and its evolutionary brother in the originals gallery.

I don’t always know how an image will turn out once I start to “Paulverize” it but I do know when it has reached the point where I think it’s something worth while. As soon as this appeared on my monitor it looked like a clown that was crying which is why I named it “Pagliacci” after the tragic opera about a clown written by Ruggero Leoncavallo.

Hey Mark, My process was quite simple; in the phase 1 image all I did was increase the saturation and then shift the color until it looked good. Photoshop is not the only game in town I use Corel Photo Paint which if you haven’t tried it is equally as powerful at a much lower price. However to create this image I used 2 different plug-ins from KAI (which is also owned by Corel). The first effect I used is called “Hyper Tiling” which allows you to bend, fold, twist and mutilate an image that gave me the composition I wanted. To give it some depth I cut a mask for the black areas under the eyes then used an effect called “Pixel Smudge” which pulls the pixels adjacent to the mask from whatever direction you choose.

Beautiful and fascinating image. Thanks for taking the time to post the original as well. Care to elaborate on the steps you took in photoshop to get to this evocative image?

I too saw a crying figure. Amazing and quite beautiful.
