For eastbound travellers arriving from the Iranian border, the ancient city of Herat, with its unpaved streets lit by kerosene lanterns, represented a veritable timewarp.

Oh how busy! When we passed through there it struck me how empty the streets were (must have been the moment: november morning 1975), the emptiness formed my impression of the town, I now realize. Very nice scene!
