Gregory of Nin (Grgur Ninski) was a 10th century bishop that opposed the Pope and introduced the Croatian language in the religious liturgy after the Great Assembly in 926.
Until that time, services were held only in Latin.
The bronze sculpture is a work of Ivan Mestrovic. It was erected in 1969, on the occasion of 900th anniversary of the chart issue ("Mare nostrum") by the Croatian king Petar Kresimir IV in 1069.
