Monument to the Living. By Collin

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela the father and grand father of our new South African nation. If more leaders follow in his foot steps for just a few steps we would have more monuments to the living and the triumph of man than to the dead and the remembrance of conflict. A kind man, a humorous man , a man with empathy but not, not a weak man.

I was doing business at the Cape Town waterfront and paused next to this statue to answer my phone. I decided to take a take a few pictures of the statues of Mandela , de Klerk and Tutu. An American tourist saw me taking pictures and handed me his camera and asked me to take some pictures with him next to the Mandela statue. He looked so proud to have his picture taken with OUR ex president that I felt quite humbled

I really like this shot of a truly good guy. Is this life size or bigger

Shirley thanks for the comments although the man in the picture did all the work. The good thing about this challenge is that you have to think about what you photographed, you can see this in other entries where there has be conflict and loss. Maybe there is hope as I am a proud (white) South African. (Now that's really corny hey I will better it and wish for world peace for Christmas) - Collin

Wonderful photo Collin, I like that you chose to take the photograph the way you did. When I read your story it made me think to myself, "I would love to have a President here that people of the world would feel proud to have a picture with". I think a lot of people in our country (speaking only from my family's point of view) are ready for a change and hopefully someone the world respects not just us.

A true golden heart. Put the human back in mankind.
