Red Orb Weaver

Santa Ana NWR

Argiope species

These types of spiders are widespread throughout the southern states and into the neotropics and beyond. We find them in all sizes and varieties, including some of the larger more enterprising individuals who can bridge the gaps high in forest canopies to spread their elegant webs above trails and other openings in the forest vegetation.

Great shot of an ugly lady - I would like to see her top view, showing the "thorns" Ours do not have the "thorns" that I know of, but get quite big, around 80 mm. I especially like the way her pedipalps? forms a pair of bins, looking at one. V
