Sand Goanna, Varanus gouldii

Near Yetman NSW

Sand goannas are widely distributed across the arid and semi-arid areas of Australia. They prefer sandy areas where digging up
spiders and small vertebrates is relatively easy. They are active lizards foraging over a wide area, alert and generally shy. They
were an important source of food for Aboriginal people over most of their range, and in some areas still are. They are threatened
by habitat distruction and feral animals. 1.2 m total length.
