As your pore [sic] over this close-up of my friend Dale, note that he looks intent and maybe a touch sad. Then look at the image below! Do the eyes tell the truth?

I'm with Gary on this one. It is rather amazing when you compare the shots. He doesn't look sad to me in the top shot but I certainly wouldn't guess the big smile either.

Terrific portrait.
I think his eyes show a transitional smile.
Transiting from a frown to a smile or a smile to a frown. It is hard to say.
