This is probably the site of the earliest bridge to be built in the city.
Records show that a timber bridge was here in about 1153 and in 1273 customs at this bridge went to maintain it.
It was rebuilt with stone in 1573 and had two arches.
In 1829 it was replaced with a cast-iron bridge.
In 1932 it was again rebuilt with stone, the design being mediaeval, with the two arches.
