Logging trucks and the paperless office

Interstate 5 in southern Oregon

On the highways of Washington and Oregon one often sees logging trucks, either loaded, as this one is, or empty (with the rear wheel portion carried on the back of the front portion). Every time I pass a truck like this I think "Please, God, don't let the posts and cables fail and let those heavy logs crush me."

Before the restrictions on old-growth logging these trucks were much more prevalent than they are today. Fewer trees can be cut, meaning fewer mills exist to process the logs, meaning fewer trucks are needed to haul the logs. Ironically, this decline in wood harvesting is occurring at the same time that the concept of "the paperless office" is being proved a fantasy.

I'll give him $65 for the whole cord.

Those "paperless offices" leave a lot to be desired, especially the restrooms...

I've had the same fear when passing vehicles with large objects lashed on them. Another fear arises from driving down through the mountains in West Virginia and wondering if the huge coal truck appearing rapidly larger in my rear-view mirror has good brakes.
