Engineer in a high state of alertness

Eugene, Oregon view map

UP 3153 is the lead unit of a southbound freight train that is slowing making its way into the Union Pacific freight yard in Eugene, Oregon. It was moving down a long yard track at about walking speed. It probably originated in Portland.

The photo's title is a gentle satire on the engineer's posture, which seems to indicate an inappropriate state of relaxation. In reality there is nothing wrong with it, as there is little for the engineer to do while crawling at a snail's pace down the track. When it's time to stop, he will apply the brakes.

Phtographed from the Maxwell Road overpass.

This is a really cool railroad shot, Dave. The aging paint job adds a lot of character.

Maybe he's waiting for his Pizza to be delivered.
