"The Wheel" - one of only two such structures ( the other is located in England ). This rotating cage was designed to only allow inmates who were being released access to the outside. It also kept unwanted people from being able to access the stairs leading to offices and the Warden's apartments located above. The wheel was operated by a guard and was turned using an old streetcar motor.
