World War II gunnery practice area

Wendover, Utah view map

While driving on a back road northeast of Wendover I discovered some odd constructions. This is one. I'm standing on an concrete track that curves around a U-shaped earthen berm that is about six feet (2m) tall and maybe 200 yards (180m) long. I had no idea what it was.

Later, at the Wendover Welcome Center, I saw photographs that shed light on the thing. I think it was a construction for training people (positioned inside the "U") to shoot at moving targets (wheeled about on the curving track on Jeeps or other vehicles). The concept and the lack of weathering were impressive. Wendover was the site of a great deal of training during the second world war: among other things, it is where pilots trained for dropping the atomic bomb on Japan.

Joe Tripod, silent and still, was visibly impressed by the site and the sight.

Joe Tripod always leaves a good impression metaphorically.
Here he was standing on concrete, so he made no physical impression.

I'll bet Joe Tripod left quite an impression.

Teamwork. You and Joe. Teamwork can move mountains. So can atomic bombs. I like the scnenery here and the explanation.
