This is apparently a fairly typical configuration of structures in the area of Samarkand, as you can find similar (the same???) images today on the websites which illustrate that ancient city. The central door in what I would call a monumental gate, flanked by two monumental towers and behind that, the domes.
To add interest to this photo, the daily drama of the market place going on in the foreground is detailed and fascinating.
