Golden creek, near June Lake, California, 2006

It is light that makes reflections work. The light on the brilliantly yellow fall foliage on the opposite bank of this creek becomes diffused and softly blurred when reflected in the water. I chose not to photograph the reflection by itself. Rather, I used the shadowed stump of a long departed tree as a focal point to draw the eye and anchor the composition, surrounding it with rippling golden water. It becomes an impressionistic image, very much in the style of an impressionist painting.

Far from a distraction, the messy tree is the point of this picture. The shadowed stump of this long departed tree represents death, while water represents renewal. Death can be messy. The golden shimmering reflection is not. The image is all about contrasts, isn't it?

I agree that the light and the color made a lovely painterly effect. I found the tree area was kind of messy and distracting. But it's interesting to see your vision and choice in creating the impression. It seemed to tell us that there's always beauty surrounding us, regardless the state we're in :-)
