Afterglow, Mono Lake, California, 2006

A cloudscape can also be a landscape. This image is both, defining the scale of the distant hills, juxtaposed against a corner of one of the most unique lakes on earth. The shape and coloration of the cloud is unique – some call it a Sierra cloud. A giant spear of pink, the well-defined cloud echoes the lighter, more diffused clouds behind it.

Glad you like the tilt here -- I had a nasty comment denegrating both myself and this image (which I have long since deleted) because the horizon was not parallel to the frame. It is like a giant spear, isn't it, Ai Li? And yes -- use your vivid imagination to take it from there.

Interesting cloudscape indeed, open to our interpretation. Your tilt worked well with your description of a giant spear, throwing itself across the sky into your frame. A great sense of motion and perhaps heat force due to the glow. My imagination of course :-)

Thanks Jack and Macastate for sharing this experience with me. I found the experience surreal, and this image is one of the most bizarre cloudscapes I've seen on my travels. I deliberately went against some of the "rules" here -- I allow the land to tilt up a bit, to match the soaring cloud and increase the sense of surrealism. And I love the bit of noise in the shot as well -- it gives the image a slight texture that adds to its other wordliness.

perhaps a craft of a distance voyager. We each perceive what we need to see I suppose. Brilliant image.
