White Dome Geyser, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, 2006

I photographed the eruption of White Dome by back lighting the spout of steam and water against a backdrop of thin clouds. The sun has created a bluish glow that adds an eerie feeling to the eruption. By abstracting the cone of the geyser and the cloud of steam, I show less, and say more, about this unique natural phenomenon. I had the feeling I was photographing a huge whale moving off into the distance, leaving a telltale spout of steam hanging in the air behind it.

Thanks, Mo -- what makes it dramatic is the contrast between light and dark, the spray of the geyser against the flow of the clouds -- moisture moving below moisture. And all of it abstracted by underexposed back lighting.

Very dramatic photo!

Abstraction can trigger the human imagination in so many wonderful ways, Jenene. We transform the subject before us into an idea, rather than a thing. And it is that idea that remains in the viewers mind long after looking at the image.

How funny to leave my comment on the previous image about the mythical creature, and here you yourself see a huge whale. The opportunity to transform what is typically a descriptive landscape shot into an abstract expressive image teaches us all to look at everything in a different way. It's something I've been working very hard at myself.
