Against All -Thursday Challenge "Breaking Rules"

I'm sorry that I have not commented on anyones image yet. It's been crazy day.
I will check you entries guys as soon as I get home tonight

I was wandering in the city looking for the theme shot, when I saw this.
I shoot it trying to convey the feeling of confrontation of these people and the city
and break as many rules as I could remember.
So let's count them. I can see at least four major:
1. Centered "bull's eye" composition
2. Total ignorance of "rule of thirds"
3. Mergers. (legs and limbs comming out of main subject head)
4. Cut limbs and bodies.
Can you find more?

Only cansid street scene I've ssen in this challenge. Good story telling that leaves the viewer intrigued.

Rules or no, this is a darn good photo. Powerful image. Vote.

I would have thought the main rule being broken is needing an umbrella and not wearing shoes!!
Bill Ewart Jr12-Oct-2006 20:06
I have to agree with Ray here, that orange burst does it!~
Jen Bixler12-Oct-2006 19:13

Yes, the orange umbrella is the killer ingredient!

those shoes on the right with the lighter add to this haunting image. V

I think you managed to break the rules and come up with a powerful image at the same time.

There are rules? ;)
I like it because of the juxtapositioning of this homeless man in the middle of the walkway with what looks like a new umbrella - against a sea of people who are more "well off".

It's like he is sitting there daring them to ignore him.

ooohhh that really bright umbrella, my eye goes straight to it!! well done!!

You did such a bad job that it's an excellent shot !! :>)

This is proof that the rules can be broken. It is quite a story telling image!
Yvonne12-Oct-2006 08:58
Despite all the faults it still has quite an impact!
Guest 12-Oct-2006 06:38
Lol great analysis. It also looks slightly lopsided :). Despite all the "defects" I like the shot man. Just shows that rules are meant to be broken, sometimes :)
Dan Chusid12-Oct-2006 06:19
Nice that you're pointing out the 'defects' for the viewer Michael.
Never too late to learn the right ropes.
: )
