Zanzibar Dhow

Eastern shores, Zanzibar, Africa.

If I had a signature travel image this would probably be it. Displayed some 30 feet across in London's Earls Court for the Travel show and appearing on London Underground advertising the same. A passing savage squall had whipped up the sea from its normal aquamarine colour and stirred the coral white sand, as fine as custard powder, to milk. I saw the potential quickly, the clouds duly sped by and the sea returned to its benign calm state. Then serendipity, a red sailed dhow happened past, I couldn't believe my good fortune. I waited until the prow of the foreground outrigger pointed to the boat and squeezed off a few shots.

The craft alone is a great shot, but as you say the sea effect is brilliant.

this is such an evocative shot - the kind that makes me say "that's where I want to be now"! so I understand this being a travel poster - despite the almost total absence of the human element, this comes across as some kind of vacation paradise - or maybe just because of it?! beautiful!
