Oh that Bozo he was a handful

It should be noted Holland accepted into her borders, and cared for in a humane fashion, almost one million Belgian and British army and civilian refugees, of whom 300,000 stayed in the country the full four years of the 1914-18 war. Britain acknowledged this generosity, and the progressive forces in the country called upon their government and people to support in a more vigorous fashion relief for the displaced refugees of Belgium.
The Leferink family in Enschede also had taken in refugees, two children from the land of the Magyars. Ten year old boy Bozo gave his new parents a hell of a time, ‘he was a rotzak’ a ratbag, I’ve heard my mother saying 40 years later. At the other hand, Eva the girl, balanced the stirrings in the extended household with her sweet delightful nature.

‘Oh, that Bozo kid was such a cheeky boy, a real handful. He was a refugee from Hungary together with little Eva, who was just the opposite, such a sweetie.’
This photo was taken around 1921; a few years after the war had ended. Taken in the paved backyard close to the gate facing Reudinkstreet. From left: Marie 19, Truus 18, Antoon 10, Frans 7, Jan 13 and Eva and Bozo in foreground.
