Goodbye, and Good Luck

This will be my last SP, at least for now.

I'm going to take a break from pbase -- in fact, from photography.
Frankly, suddenly, and surprisingly, the fun is gone. It's become
a chore - a To Do, to get something for my PaD (SQUID).

I believe strongly that when an avocation like this isn't fun
anymore, it's time to move on.

I realize it's not rational, but it feels like I've taken a photograph
of everything in my world there is to photograph. I know that's not
true, but I feel washed up, dried up, whatever you want to call it.

My experieces on pbase have been wonderful, and I'm leaving the door
open to come back if, and when, this feeling passes. When it starts
to be fun again, I'll be back.

Until then, goodbye, and good luck! And thanks for so many wonderful memories!

You will be missed sir. Good luck finding the "fun" once more, be it in photography or something else. I have no doubt we will see you back here again and we will be waiting.
Cliff27-Sep-2006 21:03
I know the feeling - but I also know that a break will regenerate the creative juices. You are a wonderfully accomplished photographer with one of the most delightful imaginations we see on pbase.
Don't be gone too long - we'll miss you Gary.

Hope to see your stuff again some day, Gary, but I do know how you feel. At least, somewhat.

I'm sad and selfishly upset. There, I'm better.
See you again hopefully.

Wonderful sp! I will miss your images!

But pack your smallest camera in your bike's saddlebag - just in case! Or come over to Australia and attempt to not take a photo....
Thank you for your inspiration and example

I will miss your wonderful work so much! Rest up and come back after you've had a good break! Take care.
Karen Leaf16-Sep-2006 19:43
I know you know how much you'll be missed around these parts, Gary, so the decision to step back must have been difficult for you. Like everyone else, I hope you'll stop by occasionally to post of your goings on, and not disappear from our lives. You've been too much a part of Pbase, to ever really leave for you've touched us all.
Stay well, my friend..

You have always brought a smile to my face! You and your images will be terribly missed! Hopefully after a break, we will see you back! Take care Gary!! Vote!

Taking a break may be just what you need to get refreshed. I can identify with your feelings.

I really enjoy your work and your SQUID idea has been a major revelation to me and will influence all my future photography. Thanks to you and a chance meeting with a 'Square' photographer when in Martha's Vineyard I now know which way I want to go with my hobby. Thanks for that, friend.

Let's say 'Aurevoir' not goodbye.
Guest 16-Sep-2006 10:22
I'm dreaming, i'm dreaming.. this is not true... It's sad to see you goodbye but we will wait for your return Gary. Goodluck.

Once again that posted before I was finished... darn keyboard.

Anyway, I will miss you and your endlessly entertaining antics. Good luck to you. Drop by once in a while to say hello... I know so many people would be happy to see you.

all the best,
liza
snootydog16-Sep-2006 05:04
I just wrote you a whole long heartfelt comment and my damn kitten jumped on the keyboard and hit just the right combination of keys to eradicate everything I'd written. Oy. I think you've given pad everything you've got and then some and I think I understand completely the need to move on. It has happened for me several times here that I have ceased to find the joy. I always take a break when that happens. I never know when or if I am coming back. My breaks tend to be short as I love the camera too much.
Robin Reid16-Sep-2006 02:22
Goodbye Gary. Godspeed. You'll be missed.

Well all the joy is gone from my world : (.
I will miss you

Your creativity will be greatly missed Gary. Long live the King (of SP) :) We'll look forward to and hope for a return in the near future.
Herb 15-Sep-2006 19:10
See you later, you will be back.
Guest 15-Sep-2006 18:52
Come back if and when you're ready. We all need a break occasionally, been entertaining the thought myself. We'll miss you and your stuff, but we all have those times.
Guest 15-Sep-2006 16:55
Hey man, good luck. I've considered your SPs the most creative and entertaining on Pbase. Even tried to emulate one or two. You will be missed. But I'm sure anyone who has even attempted PaD understands. Looking forward to your return.
Guest 15-Sep-2006 15:50
Know what you mean but...
I'm sorry to see you stop. Usually this feeling comes just before a breakthrough.
Will miss your great images.
Hope to see you back soon.
Guest 15-Sep-2006 14:38

See you soon.

Gary, we all understand but you better be back because I know that I'll have withdrawals if I don't see your work. I really hope that things go well for you and you will be missed. But, I know you'll be back!!! Please take care and hope to see you back soon!
royalld15-Sep-2006 11:52
Wow. It hurt to read that. In fact, I think I'm in shock.
I certainly understand the need to move on.
You are so good at photography it would be a shame if you put it down for long.
I join the others in the hope you will return soon.
This was a marvelously expressive SP. Vote.
Guest 15-Sep-2006 11:31

Oh, I'm sad for us!
Good luck , Gary.

I refuse to think that this is final...I hope I am right. Your an original in so many ways Gary, but you are also one of my original contacts & I'm going to miss you until this feeling passes & you come to the point where shooting something & wanting to rush home to post & share, hits you.
Best wishes.
Dan Chusid15-Sep-2006 04:36
In my experience, there comes a time when you need to take a break
from the camera (or whatever you're doing on a perpetual basis) so
that you can actually revel in your world through your eyes and not
have to figure out settings on a camera and lighting situations in your
head.

Step back, smell some real roses (not ps'd ones) and inhale some clean
air from wherever you choose to grab a seat and watch the world go by.

We'll keep your cubicle ready for you when you decide to drop by.
shatterbug15-Sep-2006 03:39
Another excellent SP in parting! I hope you change your mind, your images have brought so many smiles to all of us. I eagerly await your return, my friend! V.

I'm very surprised. You've been pumping out so many, even several a day.
You are so...so descriptive in your farewell. I looked to you as the yardstick.
And now it's like turning on the tap and the water refuses to come forth. And
you just don't miss your water till the well runs dry.
Good luck, hope to see you soon.
