Milk Splash

This shot is part of a larger series found HERE

Ever since Harold Edgerton* showed the world the remarkable world of life's brief moments, many of us have tried to capture the transcendent beauty of the simple splash of milk.

There are a few tricks that make this sort of capture more successful, and the tricks relating to dropper positioning and and focusing, found in the "Milky Way" image also in this gallery, apply here as well. Click on the image below to see useful tips:

In addition to those techniques, there are a few tricks necessary for getting the best possible image:
** Get your flash as close as possible, since a very short flash duration is critical for achieving a sharp image. If auto-exposure is problematic at the required short distance, use the smallest fractional power on the flash and adjust your ISO and aperture to obtain correct exposure.

** Try different types of milk--no fat, whole, etc. For these shots, the thinner quality of no fat (skim) milk gave the best results.

** Now this tip may or may not actually matter, but I got these great splashes by having the drops land into a large plastic spoon. It seems that the spoon's curve generates a lovely splash crown, and that's likely what you're after.
That's it! Comments welcome.
