Visiting

Sarajevo

Time could really drag on during the war. Going outside wasn't something you did unless it was really necessary. But these people, who lived in the Neboder next to the Holiday Inn, were social and passed time with friends and neighbors. Both men were soldiers. The man in the middle was on duty at the checkpoint when war criminal Borislav Herak was arrested. As usual, the real story was more entertaining than the official version. Serbian paramilitary Herak and his two companions were extremely drunk and they had a very loud car stereo going full blast. The checkpoint soldiers got frustrated trying to communicate with the trio and waved them on through. Herak drove forward but then backed up and asked a question about how far it was to a Serbian field headquarters. The guys at the checkpoint said "hey what do you want to go there for?" Herak replied he was supposed to be on duty in 10 minutes. That was his undoing. During the seige the people of Sarajevo were surprisingly upbeat and positive. I'd go home to San Francisco and everybody was negative and unhappy. Life in paradise is not always the best thing for one's mood. In Sarajevo there was no stress over parking spaces or car alarms going off at all hours. Life was about the basic essentials.
