La hiena manchada es el carnívoro más abundante en áreas donde abunden los antílopes y zebras. Es un predador formidable así como oportunista y consumidor de carroñas. Consume y digiere toda su presa incluyendo huesos y dientes.
Los grupos de hienas son regidos por una hembra dominante y es la única que procreará en todo el grupo.
En esta foto vemos dos cachorros de hiena manchada fuera de su madriguera que esperaban ansiosos la llegada de su madre y otros miembros del clan. Estos mantenían la vista fija en una dirección pero no podíamos ver nada en esa dirección. Estos cachorros seguramente detectaron olor de su madre y los otros miembros desde una distancia de más de un kilómetro ya que varios minutos después logramos ver como el clan se aproximaba a la madriguera desde esa misma dirección. Una vez la madre detecto nuestra presencia, esta comenzó a caminar en círculos y a alejarse en dirección contraria como forma de distraer nuestra atención y así no revelar la presencia de sus cachorros y la localización de su madriguera. En ese instante fue cuando decidimos que era tiempo de retirarnos para no interferir en la alimentación de los cachorros. Los cachorros de hiena son capaces de comer carne después de las 8 a 10 semanas de nacidos, la cual es regurgitada y parcialmente digerida por su madre y otros miembros del clan. Después del 4 o 5to. mes estos son introducidos a las victimas y a las cacerías, y así comienzan a aprender por imitación.

El fotógrafo de naturaleza salvaje tiene la responsabilidad absoluta de mantener cierta distancia y respetar los animales y su medio ambiente, especialmente tratar de no interferir en lo absoluto con el desarrollo y comportamiento normal del sujeto que pretenda fotografiar. Se enfatiza esto más en los casos de interacción entre depredadores persiguiendo o acechando una potencial víctima, durante el cuidado y alimentación de las crías, y durante el apareamiento.
Debemos además tener en cuenta que a cualquier momento, sin importar las circunstancias, en que el animal muestre un comportamiento anormal o se muestre nervioso o inconforme con nuestra presencia, es imperativo retirarnos del área o al menos alejarnos a una distancia en la que el animal se sienta seguro o conforme.
La tolerancia del animal a la presencia del hombre varía en cada región. En parques que son visitados por los turistas con mucha frecuencia, los animales son sorprendentemente tolerantes a la presencia y cercanía del hombre y de los vehículos ya que los ven como una parte integral de su hábitat y entienden que este no representa peligro para ellos, ni tampoco es una potencial presa.
En regiones menos frecuentadas, como el parque nacional de Tarangire, al sur del lago Manyara, en Tanzania, los animales raramente tienen contacto con el hombre y hasta hace algunos años atrás, estos eran víctimas de la cacería en safari, por lo que visitar como turista o para la fotografía de vida salvaje en esta zona, requiere mucha paciencia y estar dispuesto a recorrer grandes distancias.

The spotted hyena is the most common carnivore in areas populated by gaceles, and zebras. It is a formidable predator as well as an opportunistic, snatching kills from cheetahs, leopards and occasionally lions. Eats almost the entire kill, including bones and teeth.
The hyenas are ruled as a matriarchal society, in which the alpha female is the only one allowed to procreate. The rest of the pack help to care for the new cubs that represent the new generation.
In this picture, these two cubs were sitting right outside their den looking anxious in one direction. I could not see anything and stayed a little longer while taking few pictures of them (they appeared not to be bothered by our presence). Five minutes later, their mother and two other hyenas were seen approaching the den. It appears as if they cubs were able to smell them at a distance and were anxiously waiting and ready for “lunch time”. The hyena mother noticed our presence nearby the den and began to walk in circles and away from the den, behavior some parents use in order not to “reveal” the location of the den and their cubs.
I felt this is the classic case in which we must back away or leave in order not to interfere in their routine and care of the cubs. As I have already taken few pictures of the cubs, I decided to leave for good and give them the space they needed. As soon as we started to leave, the mother felt reassured and approached the den greeted by two playful and very hungry cubs.
It would have been nice to photograph the encounter and feeding but by them I was too far away to get any decent images.
Hyena cubs are able to eat meat after 3 to 12 months. The cubs of the alpha female would start as early as 3.5 months, but the cubs of the non-dominant females would take from 6 to 18 months.
From the moment of birth there is fierce competition among siblings and the first to be born usually prevents the other to suckle. About 25% of the newborn cubs die as a result of this behavior.
As nature photographers, we have the duty to respect the animals and subjects we photograph and we should get familiar with the appropriate distance each animal would tolerate or feel comfortable with our presence.
