READING THE HISTOGRAM to find Color Cast in Highlights.
As we checked the Left Ends in Frame 4 of this gallery to get color cast of shadows, we are now going to look to the Right Ends to get the color casts of Highlight.
Looking to the Right at the R, G & B Histograms if any one fails to extend as far to the right as the other two then that indicates you have that color cast in the highlights of the image. In this case and when dealing with Highlights color cast the color cast indicated would be the opposite of the Histogram. The only way I can think of to explain this is; it is because the image would not have enough color on this side (highlights) and therefore looks like the opposite color.
In this example I am showing there are not one but two Histograms (R & G) that do not extend to the right as far as the other so we will not determine the highlight color cast by a single Histograms lack of extension.
When there are two such (short) Histograms we must use this chart to determine color cast –
R+G= blue color cast
R+B=green color cast
G+B= red color cast
I see and read this Histogram as having the Red and Green Histograms short (looking to the right). The combination of these two short colors in my example indicates blue color cast in the highlights as per the Chart above.
In summary of color cast in highlight areas of this image as I read this Histogram - They are there in blue and are harsher then in the shadow. A quick look at the image shows me blue sky and so the harshness of the highlights might be accented by this fact. I will take this into account when I try correction of color cast in this image.
I have read by the histogram that I have a blue color cast throughout the image.
