Merced River in evening sun

Nearing sundown in mid-February, I rode by Yosemite's Sentinel Bridge and saw a bunch of photographers lined up,
waiting to get a photo of Half Dome with the "golden evening sun" highlighting it.
I parked my bike, but then felt a little silly standing there in with a barrage of cameras, all pointing at the same thing.
I walked away and over to the other side of the bridge where nobody was, and found that the evening sun was doing nice things to the calm river and trees,
not to mention someone walking up to the spot where you see them in the photo.
I still got the "golden Half Dome" photo, as did the other 20 people standing there, but I liked this one better.

Beautiful shot! Details, light, contrast perfect balance. Shows that 99.9% of the time it's about the photographer knowing how to use his camera. I'm still learning the FZ30!

I urge my students to do exactly what you do here, Gary. Whenever you find a bunch of photographers lined up to make the same picture, just look in the opposite direction, and you will likely find an image that will be uniquely yours. For example, instead of making the cliche of El Capitan's reflection in the Merced, I waited until a fellow photographer stumbled into my frame and was reflected before it, upside down in the river. I rotated the image to bring the reflection upright:http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/35601778 (I used my FZ-20 for this shot. Shortly after, I moved to the FZ-30, and will now begin to use the FZ-50!) Given what you learned at Yosemite, you might also like to see this photo of sunset at Half-Dome made by one of my students, Malaysia's Celia Lim. I hope you framed this one - this one needs to be hanging up in a place of honor. Beautiful - I love the golden light.
