Swan of Avon

How could the bird commonly called the Mute Swan be associated with the poet and playwright who voiced so many ideas and gave us a speech for every occasion? Whether in England’s Stratford or Canada’s, nesting pairs of swans are found preening and sailing near the shores of the River Avon. The Shakespeare Festival Theatre in Stratford, Ontario juts out majestically from the grassy slope above the lake, and every visit to the town includes the requisite stroll along the water’s edge. The ungainly and oddly proportioned birds share the path with their human admirers and then slip into the water where their graceful forms make a reverse silhouette against the dark water.

And then I remember that beauty without is not always beauty within. Those same mute swans are not at all welcoming to many species who try to rest on our bays and ponds as they migrate. Their territorial exuberance and daunting size can really damage more fragile and endangered species.

Isn't it a conundrum, as they are so lovely?

Your photo shows them as we all wish they were. Your lighting superb.

Today you were the FIRST blog I read! This photo is exceptional! I thought I had a couple of neat swan captures until I saw it. It made me think of the elderhostel you mentioned on photography yesterday. That's something we should really look in to...or perhaps I'll see if Judy and I can try one together while Jack holds down the fort here. I'd love to take a class in watercolor painting...trying to decide whether to try that here at CCC or wait and see if there is something in Sebring. The light/texture of the water/reflection, and, of course the swan make this worth framing in my mind. Then your wonderful words would have to be attached to the back. HAVE ANOTHER LOVELY DAY IN THE GARDEN!! Thanks for the lisianthus, and for remembering.
