Like most burying beetles, this individual has a thick coat of mites on its under surface. These mites, Poecilochirus spp., are phoretic, that is they do not harm their host, but just use the beetle as a means of getting around. They evidently pay for this ride by eating eggs of flies that might compete for food resources (dead bodies) of the larval beetles.
