Ksar or Ksour for plural, are one of the most unusal and fascinating types of buildings we came across in Tunisia. Found mostly in the south, these buildings are so unusual looking that they were deemed alien enough to be used as locations for some of the movies in the "Star Wars" saga. Ksour are infact primatively simple communal structures built by Berbers to store their grains. During the Arab invasion in the 10th century, the Berbers often built the ksour on hilltops and fortified it to defend their food supply. Surprisingly, some of these ancient ksour are still in use, although many have been abandoned. Tourists can freely visit and explore the ksour on their own if they can get to them. We managed to visit 17 of the 42 ksour listed in our guidebook over a span of 3 days, amassing quite a huge collection of photos in the process, which, for your sakes, I'm only sharing a fraction of!
