Despite the seemingly random quality the symmetry is really so exquisite --- only four people are actually talking to each other, the couple on the upper left and the couple on the lower right; the rest are preoccupied with their own thoughts. The other great traveller, Kipling, once said, "and never the twain shall meet, Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God’s great Judgment Seat ." Alas, that still seems painfully true.
