The Interstate-5 Bridge
by Helen Betts

Vancouver, Washington

This vertical lift drawbridge spans the Columbia River, joining Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, and was completed in 1917. I was having dinner on the river, keeping my eye on the bridge and the setting sun, when all of a sudden the light was perfect and the metal was gleaming. Needless to say, my husband's family thought it was very curious when I jumped up, ran down to the riverbank and started shooting while my dinner got cold. There is a railroad bridge behind this one with a train crossing it, although it's a bit hard to see in this shot.

Great lighting and nice symmetry between the two sets of bridge supports.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. Melanie, we are still living out of suitcases and in hotels, but we're finally back in Washington, DC, for the next two years. Quite a culture shock after being overseas for the past 15 years (this time; there was another overseas tour in Australia before that). Helen

Beautiful light and color Helen, so are you in Washington now? --Melanie

Great sky color, but more the way the color catches the upper parts of the bridge. It gives the old metalwork some life, and speaks to its endurance.

Oh my, what we Sony folks will go through to get a good shot of something ;-) Well Helen, sorry your dinner got cold but there will always be more dinners; this shot was either then or never. It's just beautiful the way the sun is causing that metal to gleam. I like the color of the sky too it really shows up the details of the image, even the very fine wires. Really a nice shot!
