I loved what Ray wrote. Comments like that are a reminder why it's great to post images on pbase. As for the picture, at first I found the title conflicting. There is a double meaning of separation - the first caused by the grill and the second for the man himself. I thought something more on the man like "descent" might be more appropriate. However, I let this sit with me for a day or so and that uncomfortable feeling I initially had has faded and the confusion I thought was there now seems to be complimentary. As for the image itself, I really like it. Great square crop. The foreground is awesome - a mesh of wire and metal - all bent out of shape in the most urban of ways. The background however is something else. Just enough out of focus. The dof and motion blur that masks the man's identity is so well done and as you know, something I aspire to. All round excellence

Beyond the grille, the other side is locked tight. The lone figure walks in weary resignation. And yet despite it being one of the saddest images I have ever seen, I find it full of grace and beauty. The critic Ingrid Sischy once said that to aestheticize tragedy is the fastest way to anaesthesize the feelings of those who are witnessing it. This image belies that statement. Bravo Chuck!
