Gate of Love and Peace

Tisbury, Wiltshire, England

I find this gate intriguing but have no knowledge of it's history.

There are some clues though - the initials 'P' and 'H'; the English Rose and French Fleur-de-Lys; and the Dove of Peace.

Strangely it is dated 1942. I don't think I have ever seen anything made in 1942, the midst of the war years.

I can only assume this rare war-time frivolity was to commemorate a marriage between Philip and Henrietta, maybe.

Perhaps he was shot-down in his Spitfire in 1940 then she nursed him and helped him escape......

This gate was made to commemorate an RAF Flying Officer with Bomber Command whose aircraft was lost over the North Sea in 1942. He was the son of the people who owned Gaston Manor. PH was his initials, Peter Hebblethwaite, although he was christened Eric. The gate was designed by his father Brian. I believe it is traditionally painted in the colours of his squadron, although the house has changed hands many times since the war.
Ron Turner, landlord of the Boot Inn would be a good source to tap for further details.
