The Birch Memorial Clock Tower was built to commemorate James William Woodford Birch. Birch was appointed as the first British Resident in Perak in Oct 1874, and was killed about a year later in Nov 1875 by locals. There are different versions on why he was killed.

The clock tower has four panels of murals that show famous figures throughout civilisation, including Buddha, Joan of Arc, etc.
