storm

At an outdoor event and had brought my camera. It had been thundering and lightning off to our west a great deal. Turned on the radio and heard just a couple miles to the west, there was 5 1/2 inches of rain in a little over an hour and hail covering the ground in some areas nearby. So the weather service had issued a severe storm and flash flood warning for the county we were in...saying there had been numerous reports of funnel clouds and rotating wall clouds. We left the event and came over a hill and spotted this unusual cloud formation to our south (the direction we were going)...so I thought maybe it best to stop and take a few pics instead of driving through this. After stopping, I did notice all the clouds were going around in a circle, which is not a good sign :-) There weren't any touchdowns, but a lot of hail damage to crops in this area. The sky was very dark and ominous...and this wall cloud was very, very low. The clouds around it had a general rotation with it being at the center.

A fantastic, dramatic shot. Good of you to stop, and more importantly have presence of mind to analyze what was unfolding. It could be terrifying.

When I lived in rural Pennsylvania many years go, wall and funnel clouds were more commmon than not... Tornados were extremely rare in this area of metro NY until recently when they hve become an unfortunate reality with our changing weather. I saw this image, Barri, and immeditely knew what it was. You captured it perfectly in all its power. V.

Oh man.. how many of these have I seen around this place too! Glad you're okay, and didn't have touch down. Sorry you're getting this stuff your way now, but looks like we're all in for another rough season. Nice shot.
