Year: 1857
Type: Braided Hair Half Cent
Variety: C-1
Grade: PCGS AU 50 BN
Mintage: 35,180
Here is a 1857 half cent example of the Cohen-1 variety, an R-2 coin.
It has smooth brown surfaces and just a touch of wear on the high points.
A depression on the right obverse field between Liberty's hair and star 11
is thought to be die grease and is evident on many examples of this date.
This was the last year of the half cents, the lowest mintage of all of the
Braided Hair type in use from 1849 to 1857, and much of the mintage
of 35,180 was melted by the mint.
This coin was purchased from Heritage and now lives in a Dansco type set.
