Gothic arches, Florence, Oregon, 2006

The architecture of this 1936 bridge over the Siuslaw River is beautiful in itself. At dusk I was able to abstract this architecture, using the golden light and deep shadows created by the setting sun. Some might find the light illuminating the tiny red directional sign in the middle of the bridge to be distracting. I found it added a new dimension to meaning – the old bridge has always carried traffic in two directions, and the sign can be viewed as a symbol of life as a two way street. Our trip's co-leader, Winn Krafton, chose to photograph the entire bridge at the same moment, using the golden light to tell an entirely different story. See it by clicking the thumbnail below.

The combination of nature and aesthetic insight (in this case from an architect) do add a spiritual dimension to this image. Thanks, Tim, for pointing this out. Yes, there are overtones of man-made cathedral here, and Christine has amazingly seen these arches as "doors to the forest" -- in effect, as keys to the natural world. I did not consciously consider these things as I made this photograph, but now that both you and Christine point them out to me, I must be pleased with the instincts that led me to make this image as I did.

I agree with Christine - you have created a spirituality (to my viewing) combining the natural and man-made world.

Thanks for making this observation, Christine -- by seeing the arches as doors into the forest instead of the supports of a bridge, you show us the depth of your wonderful imagination.

It is true that they look like arches of a church. They look like doors into an unusual world in the background forest.
