Yes, wide open skies, if a person's eyes still work good, it is possible to see for at least 100 miles from a vantage point. This streak of lightning was probably at least 3 miles or farther away. It was definitely far enough away that I could not hear the thunder. -- Bob K.

wow. I never get to see both the beginning and the end of lighting. You must have some very large and open skies there, Bob. Just great!

Great streak lightning shot! Good catch! I love the colors of the surrounding cloud too! The trick is to not let it strike you in the head! ;o)

Very impressive. How do you make a picture like this? The exif shows a shutter speed of 30 s. Do you "aim" at a part of the sky with a lot of lightning, open the shutter and hope that the lightning will happen at that point?
