Rescued this little guy who was hitching a ride on a colleague's back at work today and let him spend the night on our orchid at home before releasing him tomorrow. He'll hopefully earn his keep and catch a few pesky flying bugs before he is on his way.
I have no idea what he is. Looks like "Gonzo" from 'Sesamie Street" and is sort of built and acts (vaguely) like a praying mantis - maybe a young form of it?
Update:
I think I found it.. seems to be a Arilus cristatus (Wheel Bug) nymph. This is a type of Assassin bug. See:
http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/trees/wheel_bug.htm
"When disturbed, the wheel bug can inflict a painful bite. The bite has been described variously as worse than stings from bees, wasps, or hornets. Barber (1919) and Hall (1924) described in detail the effects of such bites. In general, initial pain often is followed by numbness for several days. The afflicted area often becomes reddened and hot to the touch, but later may become white and hardened at the puncture area. Occasionally, a hard core may slough off, leaving a small hole at the puncture site. Healing time varies but usually takes two weeks and may take half a year..."
I think I'll release him not too close to the house...
