Buck on the Forest's Edge

I went shooting once again with Dick last Friday who is an extremely fine photographer and his specialty is wildlife. He knows several deer in Cades Cove by name having photographed them for four years. He calls this one Curly because his antlers are deformed. If you enlarge this shot, you can see that his reemerging antlers are already oddly shaped. Curly and the two does he stays with and their yearlings now recognize Dick and are not afraid of him. He has sat in the grass with them as they lay about eating six or eight feet away. Friday we walked slowly to where they were bedded down and stood for maybe 15 minutes no more than fifteen feet away as he spoke softly to them. There with Curly were his two does and two yearlings and it was amazing to be that close to them without any sign of their fear. Check out Dick's photos of Curly from last year when his rack was grown out. See: http://www.pbase.com/richardr/curly_and_friends

Curly almost emerged from complete darkness, which added some mysterious factor to this image. It's wonderful to be that close.

Sure glad you got to meet Curly and his ladies. They obviously took a liking to you, too! The lighting in this one is simply splendid, with Curly emerging from the dark shadows into the light. Thanks for the link to my Curly Gallery!

I like the lighting. Something about new life emerging from the deep shadows or something.

Very nice! Yes, indeed, you could give name to all the wildlife. Interesting to realize these animals have a place where they live, and you can get to find them if you go over and over at the same place.
