Desert plant, Phoenix, Arizona, 2006

As you will see from the many other examples in this gallery, there are many ways to compose an image. In this case, nature itself has organized the image for us. All we need to do is find the most expressive spot from where we can photograph this work of nature. This plant is comprised of a series of symmetrical leaves, fanning out from the center to create a radial composition. Radial compositions are those in which key elements spread out from the middle of the frame towards the corners and edges. I center this symmetrical subject by standing over it at a slight angle. I use my spot meter to expose on the brightest leaves, and the rest of the image becomes darker and more abstracted. The radial composition gives the image a sense of latent energy, even though the subject itself is static.

Thanks, Shubhadip, for coming to this image. What you are seeing here is the effect of radial composition. Whenever key elements spread out from the middle of the frame towards the edges, they will imply such things as growth, envelopment, emergence, and as you say, the blooming of life itself.

Both you and Tim see this image as a metaphor for life, Marisa. I place it here as an example of radial composition, yet its content becomes vastly more important than its form. Tim sees this image as symbolizing the core of life, threading its way through both shadow and light. You see it as representing sheer growth, not just for life, but for the universe itself. When I look at this image now, I can see it with new eyes, thanks to both of you.

the walk of life is represented here, Phil. I see how life develope without caring about the enviroment conditions (desert or rainforest), growing with strenght and confidence. from a dark center/core, radial growing to the extremes.. like the evolution of the universe: one little condensed dot that, after the big bang, continue to develope creating new and fascinating life.

As usual, your metaphors ring true for me. I agree -- this plant is a microcosm of life itself. As it grows, it sends its long leaves out in every direction in search of nourishment and light. The greatest growth is always at the core.

I see a metaphor for life emanating from our core - sometimes life leads us into the shadows sometimes to the light.
