Peziza badioconfusa7870e.jpg

Blue Mt. Reservation, Peekskill, NY

This is one of several brown Peziza species. Peziza badioconfusa is very common in Spring (May and June). It is terrestrial, but may also be found fruiting on dung and in woodland deris among sticks. The smooth brown interior of this cup fungus is where the spores are located - within asci. The exterior of the fungus is granular-looking and reddish-brown. When very young, the area where the fungus is attached to the ground is violet (see next photo), but changes to dull brown as it matures.
Pezizas are all very brittle. They are reported to be edible and are probably enjoyed mainly for their texture and the flavor of the butter they are cooked with.
