Sheena, I like your interpretation. In fact, he is in front of a ballet school, so could be influenced by dancers.

This image caught my eyes immediately and made me in love thereafter. He seemed to be rather a dancer than a playful boy, the way he bent his head and looked downward gave me a feeling that he must be absorbed in the music, thinking of something deeply. Very elegant pose of a young boy. wonderful capture!

Childhood can be a lonesome experience. The brick walls create a metaphor that tells us that his choices are limited. The open space behind him is washed out -- negating his options there as well. He has no place to turn, except within himself. Wonderful, story-telling image, Shirley. No electronic manipulation is needed to stress the point. It stresses itself.
