In Japan, all gas and electricity meters hang outside and once a month meter maids come and check them.
They carry handheld computing devices in which they input the reading on the meters and then print out
slips of the payments to be deducted from my bank account. The slips are put in my mailbox every month.
For meters that are placed rather high up or on walls that are not close to the street, the meter
maids carry small periscope-like devices and binoculars so they can check any meter in view.
