Rising with the sun, Beijing, China, 2006

Ancient Beijing, host to the 2008 Olympic games, is in the throes of a massive building boom. Looking east from our hotel window we saw massive cranes topping dozens of new buildings that seem to be rising along with the sun. The joint symbolism of a rising sun and at least ten huge cranes makes this image go well beyond a standard shot of the Beijing skyline. The low light abstracts the entire scene, the color adds its own symbolic meaning, and the layer after layer of dimly perceived buildings attests to the size of this massive city.

Thanks, Shirley -- you are right. Beijing's poor air quality helps make this image so expressive by abstracting detail and filtering the sun it rises into an orange disc. I like your concept of hope amidst chaos. A positive metaphor for any emerging nation.

Phil, the massive building boom must be also taking a toll in the air quality of the city. The fog, however, makes it easier to see the beautify of sunrise. Your image is showing us hope among chaos. Yes, my crane image,http://www.pbase.com/wangxh/image/64070186, is about energy and thrust as you said, which is helped by the sky background (The blue and white sky doesn't come often during this season. Everyone joyed that day it felt like autumn.)
