This is the Pohutu geyser at Whakarewarewa, the most active of Rotorua's 4 major thermal areas, viz: Whakarewarewa, Waimangu, Waiotapu and Hell's Gate. 'Pohutu' is a Maori word meaning 'big splash' or 'explosion'. A tourist attraction since the early 1900s, the Pohutu geyser usually erupts between 10-20 times a day, spurting hot water up to 30m (100ft) into the air. The average eruption lasts from 10-15 minutes.
