A gorgeously toned example of a satin proof buffalo nickel.
Buffalo nickel proofs come in three distinct types. The first were
"matte proofs" for the nickels of years 1913 to 1916, and rumor has
it there is a 1917 (no TPG has graded one such). Proof production
stopped in 1916 then resumed again in 1936. 1936 was a transition
year -- first there were satin proofs (a more lustrous version of
"matte") then there were brilliant proofs (more mirror-like in
appearance). From then on it was brilliant proofs, with the first
brilliant proofs with cameo contrast occuring in 1937.
Thank you Michael!
