1967 - Don posing with "Buster", our St. Bernard mascot at Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet, on Peanut Island

USCG Station Lake Worth Inlet, Peanut Island, Florida view map

Buster was a great mascot and he led a great life, but he had a few screws loose in his head. He loved to ride the rescue boats, getting soaked from sea spray, and would swim in the salt water near the docks, but he was absolutely terrified of rain drops. He broke out the ground level basement windows several times trying to escape rain showers. He also hated it if a guy swung another guy around in a circle and would attack the person being swung. He nailed me good once requiring a doctor's visit and a tetanus shot. He also acted weird when teenagers from Palm Beach would come over to visit in their boats.

Thanks again!

Wow, am I glad to see that you posted that information about Buster. While Buster was everyone's dog on the station I liked to think that I was one of his favorites because I always paid attention to him and made sure he always had water in his bowl. That didn't keep him from biting me while being swung around in a circle though, haha.

There are a couple of other shots of Buster in this same gallery (same page) and a couple of shots in the Coast Guard Friends gallery at:

I'll look for more in the future and will let you know if I find any.

Thank you again for writing! You must have surely been surprised to find photos of Buster on the internet after all these years? It's amazing.....

Buster was once our much-loved family pet; he was a wonderful, and gentle pet; I would spend hours resting on his huge body as I watched Saturday morning cartoons. However, in our modest family home, Buster's size and healthy appetite became too much for my mother to handle in addition to raising her two young children. So our father, Benjamin "Skip" Symons, who had once been in the Coast Guard and stationed at Peanut Island, gave Buster to that station as their mascot. Our family missed Buster greatly, and would often boat to Peanut Island for a picnic and visit with our dear friend...it was so great to see him bound across the beach towards us for a visit. I have an old news article on Buster where he had been on a rescue boat and had aided in a rescue. I'm so glad to know that Buster made new, and good, friends living with his Coast Guard friends on Peanut Island...he deserved the best! If you have any other photos of Buster, our family would be thrilled to see them.
